Fletcher Long prefers minimal government as opposed to a corrupt, abusive, inefficient and tyrannical one. This book is a collection of his writings, the title derived from his popular radio show, The Long Version. No one has spoken more directly, more comprehensively, and with greater fervor and power to our modern day legal culture than Fletcher Long. In the movie, “Liar, Liar,” another attorney named “Fletcher,” played by actor Jim Carrey exaggerates the stories of his self-centered, money-grubbing clients to make money for his law firm and boost his career. Fletcher’s son makes a wish that for just one day his father can’t tell a lie. But Fletcher Long does not have to be under a spell to tell the truth, which he acknowledges is somewhere in the Long Version of any story.

I, like many people, think our justice system, while it has its faults, is still the best in the world. That may be true but wow...has Fletcher Long opened my eyes on our system which has many flaws in it and needs to be fixed. In the way only a brilliant country lawyer can explain, Long uses examples from his radio show to illustrate the pitfalls of our system. Cleverly written, straightforward and not filled with a bunch of legalize. Someone like me can understand it and a lawyer will not be bored by it. A difficult task but Long pulls it off. If you believe in our system of government, the constitution and liberty, you owe it to yourself to pick up this book to learn more about what is going on behind the scenes of our criminal justice system. I can also recommend his radio show as well. Check it out!

As a future JD student wanting to practice criminal defense "The Long Version" has been the most interesting read in my undergraduate career. Fletcher Long encapsulates through his blog excerpts that are comprised of witty anecdotes what it is like to be one of the most famous criminal trial attorneys in the Bar of Tennessee. Thereafter, Mr. Long was wrongly convicted of a felony and disbarred due to our failed justice system. This is what I and many others have to look forward to if we WARRIORS don't fight for justice!
All people are complex creatures and Fletcher Long is no exception. The book is at its strongest when Fletcher is at his most vulnerable. If Fletcher is not a Shakespearean character, he is at least worthy of a Grisham novel. Truly a brilliant lawyer with charisma encountered maybe once or twice in a lifetime, he was also haunted by demons. A number of the essays in this book are Fletcher's reflections on current events, or societal commentary. This book, however, soars when it tells aspects of the story of Fletcher Long, directly or metaphorically. These remarkably honest vignettes are at once compelling and raw.
Fletcher Long has an awesome radio program and covers things you are not likely to hear from "regular" media outlets. Fletcher has run the gauntlet and come through the other side with new "tools" to use to promote justice and otherwise to contribute to the public good. His family has been dragged along with him through extremely challenging times, but adversity builds grit (when managed well) and I have met his family and his children all seem exceptionally intelligent, and well-mannered and well-adjusted--as though they are no worse for the wear.

I met Fletcher through Facebook groups that address injustices done to families through the court system. My own child didn't "fall through the cracks," she was PUSHED through and has experienced 2 years of sorrow and fear that should never have touched her through a system that is supposed to protect people's rights, and to work in "the best interest of the children."

I never could have imagined the depth of corruption and the lies and cheating that go on in the legal system. Family court (divorce and child custody) is a cesspool that not children should be dragged into. Child Protective Services is another corrupt agency that uses the power of the courts to ravage innocent families in a way that you would never believe if not experienced by you or someone close to you.

I used to think that you had to have harmed your child or committed some heinous act in order for the courts to deprive you of contact with your child. I thought you had to have done something wrong to get arrested. I thought people told the truth (lawyers and litigants) because perjury is a serious offense and nobody, especially an attorney, would dare show such disrespect for the judge and their profession by lying about material facts in order to gain an "advantage" in a legal "battle.

I believe there really was "equal justice under law" and if ALL the relevant facts and ALL the laws were on your side and if the other side didn't have a leg to stand on, a pro se litigant could prevail. Not true.

Fletcher covers a wide variety of topics in his program and in this book, but the ones addressing the injustice and other corruption are the ones that most resonate with me. He is a gifted writer and he is clear, concise, and elegant in his writing style and his book is a pleasure to read, although the subject matter is sometimes troubling.

I think this is a book that should be on everyone's shelf and his program is well worth tuning in to.

Thanks, Fletcher, for all you to, and I am looking forward to Volume 2.

I admit some bias in that the author and I are old friends. That said, the book is vintage-trademark Fletcher Long. Those of us who know him have always joked, "Don't ask Fletcher his opinion on something unless you want the blunt-absolutely unabridged version of the way he feels." As I read his book, I could close my eyes and hear him saying what was on the written page. You might not always agree with the "Long Version" but you will always get his honest feelings and position on things and he might just make you reassess your previously held opinions on things. A good read for those who like the guy who fights for the underdog.
A fantastic read about a truth never told. This book is a must have if you care at all about what is really going on as opposed to what you're being told.
Very personal and intelligent book. It's not for sissies... Long leaves no doubt where he feels the justice system fails us and what can be done to correct those failures. Great read from a great radio show host!
I just received my copy in the mail two days ago and I am pleasantly surprised at how good it is. As a legal professional, I can relate and agree with everything I've read up to this point. I think it's a must have for anyone with a career in the legal field.
